What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgery that changes the shape of the nose. The purpose of nose surgery can be both cosmetic, such as changing the appearance of the nose, and health, such as, improving breathing difficulties, or both.
It is good to know that the upper part of the nasal structure includes bone and the lower portion is cartilaginous, and rhinoplasty can alter bone, cartilage, skin or all. Don’t forget to consult your surgeon if rhinoplasty is suitable for you.
How is nose surgery performed?
Rhinoplasty is performed through a small external incision at the base of the nose, between the nostrils. Your surgeon will change the shape of the nasal bone or cartilage based on how much you need to remove or add and the structure of your nose.
For trivial changes, the surgeon uses cartilage taken from inside your nose or ear, and for bigger changes, the surgeon uses rib cartilage, implants, or bone from other parts of your body. After that, the surgeon pulls back the skin and tissue of the nose and stitches the incisions. If the portion between the sides of the nose is bent or crooked, the surgeon can correct it to improve breathing difficulties.
Who are candidates for nose surgery?
As mentioned, rhinoplasty can change the size, shape or proportion of your nose and is appropriate for those who need to repair deformities caused by injury, correct a birth defect or improve some breathing difficulties.
